My daughter is probably going to be joining the Texas Junior High Power rifle team. We've been going to Saturday practices for a month now. The coaches have been letting me shoot once in a while when my daughter takes a break, because most of the adults at the competitions are also competing. Gives me a reason to want to wake up that early as well.
But I've never shot NRA rifle before. This is standing offhand at 200 yards, something that I've never done before. I have TERRIBLE trigger discipline from all the hog hunting.
Anyway, so several weeks ago coach #1 told me to bring my rifle and shoot it. It took a while to get it sighted in because I had to put a scope on it again (had a NV scope on it for past several years), but once it got sighted in I shot 1 group sitting at 100 yards on a 200 reduced target, and 1 group prone at the same target.
The top right circled group was my sitting group, and the bottom left circled group was my prone group. I only shoot sitting when I'm trying to sight in a rifle. He gave me some pointers and I shot pretty decently.
Today's practice was different. As I said, it was 200 yards standing offhand. I shot at paper first and shot an 87/88 or so, and the coaches told me I was shooting super good for a newbie. I told them I didn't believe them so they shot a group. Coach #1 shot this:

It was a lot of fun. I'd love to start competing with my daughter, but they told me when and where the first match is and how long it is, and I'm worried I'm getting into something pretty expensive. I can't afford to sleep in a hotel out of town. The 4H stuff my kids compete in (and do very well, they are Texas state champions) gets really expensive so I can only imagine what this is like.
