A head scratcher and somewhat fun. I wet to a bank last week because some idiot decided that running a saws all into a roof cap was the right thing to do, when fixing a roof leak. He cut through refrigeration lines and power supply. ( No it wasn't this idiot lol ) I took care of that issue but had another system with a refrigeration restriction or said to be, by another. I checked it myself and felt like it was the filter drier, so I recover the charge and put new drier in. Drier was partly stopped up / restricted some but not real bad. Started the unit up and we are good,,, for a short time and tripping out on head head pressure again. WTF is going on here and have another unit doing almost the same thing. I getting very interested at this point but baffled also. I'm not asking for help yet and have all day to figure it out but know deep down, I will not be given another day to do so,, so I have to make it happen. I know the other person checked fan rotation, speed and just about everything and trust in, what I was told. I pulled the filter door on the unit while running and freaking busted out laughing. Now I know what in the heck is going on. I pulled a secondary discharge air door also and let the unit pull air from outside and discharge it, outside. Now I have air flowing across coil and correct pressures. Now I have to find a fire damper and placing a high bet that there is one somewhere in this place. Sure enough and every system has one in supply duct and return duct. The solder melts at 160 degrees and damper slams shut and locks. Not sure how many foot pounds the springs are but they was not easy to unlock and push back up / scotch open. Why did these dampers slam shut is unknown at the time and ya don't get 160 degree air out of a heat pump or the heat strips, or both combined.
So was the change out of driers on both units necessary when the fire dampers was the main problem? I want to say yes because the units had been tripping out on high head pressure for awhile and know what 600 PSI does to things inside of the system. They was partly restricted, so I or another would have been back in a month or three, to find completely restricted. I bet the compressors fail prematurely, also, along with heater limits and pressure switches, because of making and breaking so many times. Back to the poor soul that cut through a line set and power wires. I would have loved to been a fly on the wall, when that took place. I bet you couldn't have seen across the parking lot for the fog and bolt of lighting LOL. Bet he or she cleaned their drawers out also and just made a mistake. He!!, I cut circuit B line set instead of circuit A, years ago in the paper mill. Released about 90 pounds of refrigerant into the main office, 3rd floor. This is where I hung out with all the engineers and safety folks. Never in my life seen people come running to me as this and was escorted to the damn fire house for a meeting. Yeah, we couldn't have in the conference room, in main office LMAO. I was suspended from my daily 2 hour hangout with all the cool kids for two weeks and was promoted to safety and OSHA. Them screwballs knew how to punish me in a way, that no others would dream of ( well some others lol ) instead of termination. I'm glad for some mistakes I have made if that makes sense. Something is wrong if I go thru a day, without F ing up, and that's for sure.
