I wanted a deer to eat and just couldn't get into the mood, until today. 3 hours of rifle season left and went to a place that I roamed years ago. It has changed and found a spot that I could see for about 130 yards, all around me, other than behind. Way the he!! over a creek, few hollars, clear cut, next county and differ zip code,, was another little open area. Sun was setting and to my back and hit this place like a spot light. Within 15 minutes I seen deer feeding down this hill and stood out like a sore thumb. SOB and telling myself NO, don't even think about but heck, we can at least get rifle set up on one and pretend. I did and watched them until going out of site, in brush/woods. 10 minutes later, they caught my eye again and getting ants in the pants. No freaking range finder and haven't shot this rifle for years. I dug thru some of my stuff and found a bag of the 85 grain HP, and called it good for close range and did not plan on a shot, over 100 yards if that. I remembered that the load was stupid accurate and bottom of the 300 yard circle was dead on, at 387. Yeah, my 6.5 Rem mag with 3x9 Nikon BDC. I had plenty of time to get rifle settled in on top of a stump but didn't really know what to do next. Looks about a good 500 yards plus and locked in on mamma. Tell myself no and pick out a little one about half her size. Looks like 500 or so yards and it will end in one of three ways, is what I'm telling myself. A complete miss and no hopes for a deer to show up, closer. Pass the shot and hope to see a deer up close. Kill it and it will be pure he!! to drag for a good 1.75 miles. Shoot it is and I always say, don't leave fish to find fish. I put the bottom of the 500 yards circle on the shoulder and touched the trig. That 673 will buck up on ya but got back in the scope fast as I could. Seen two tails going up the hill and one running left. Looked like it may have flipped over something and seen lots of white for a second and not tail. No doubt I dusted it but next to come is the PRESSURE.
I walked about 1/2 mile around the road but that road doesn't take ya to where my deer is and had to leave. This is why ya don't shoot freaking deer across clear cuts and ridges, right before dark. I will go back in the morning and get it. I will also pray that yotes or bear doesn't have dinner tonight. Like Joe has said many times, pat on the back is a short way to one on butt. I was so proud of my shot and even gave out a loud, he11 yeah in the woods, but then said, O heck no. Be some good pictures tomorrow of point A to point B and my ignorance.
