My wife has given me the OK to look for a gun.
So I'm looking for a bolt-action .30-06, because it's a dang good cartridge and I already load for it.
But I haven't found any yet. In the meanwhile, I've been looking at cartridges in general and have given myself more questions to ask than answers.
Wife thinks I should just build another .300 BO upper instead because I do have a bare lower sitting around. And I don't need the .223 upper to be on a lower. Problem is, I haven't been super impressed with the .300 BO so far. It's definitely superior to the .223 for shooting hogs, but doesn't kill 'em as quick as a .450 Bushmaster does (just for example).
I've seen a couple of Ruger American Ranch rifles here and they look pretty handy, but they don't come in calibers I'm really interested in. I'm not interested in Metric calibers, or calibers I can easily just get an AR upper in, because semi-auto is superior for my intended usage anyway.
I was told to look for a Remington 742 in .30-06. The guy at the pawn shop says he gets them in pretty regularly and they are pretty cheap. Would be in the right price range.
What I REALLY want is a Ruger Model 44, but those have gotten pretty expensive. And I really need a bolt-action more than anything, I think. I have a bunch of semi-autos already. Hahaha.
Anyone have any suggestions on rifles? Or cartridges? Primary purpose is slaying hogs, but will probably end up being used on deer and other things in the future.
A guy here has a few Mosin-Nagant rifles for sale. Two of them are Finnish guns (a Tikka and a Sako) and are shorter and have nicer stocks on them. Is buying an old Mosin and sporterizing it a worthwhile pursuit? I know nothing about most bolt actions in general.
