Have a bolt action 762x39. While it eats my stash of steel case stuff just fine, I wouldn't mind being able to load up some quality rounds when .311 components become available again.
And I do have a supply of ~270 reloadable brass rounds ....
But from what I understand, 762x39 is not exactly standard, depending on what country/manufacturer made it.
What I need clarification on -
1 - Some brass will use large rifle primers, others small. When I actually start loading, will that make any real difference other than the obvious "use large primers in large primer brass and vice versa"? In other words, given that both are out there and "available" (hah!) should I have a preference of one type of case over another?
2 - Barrel/bullet diameters.
2a - Some are .308, some are .311 (mine is .311). Same with some ammo, depending on who made it (I think the Winchester white box stuff is .308). I assume that when I fire said ammo it will fire form to my chamber and from that point on can be reloaded as if it started life as .311 ?
2b - I've seen new brass listed (out of stock of course). If it comes with a .308 neck, can I assume that when I run it through a resizing die w/ a .311 neck expander/decapper it will have "no problem" moving out to .311? Using maybe some more careful lubing in the case neck?
2c - I know I can go down to .308 sized bullets (if I have dies set up to do so) and may loose some accuracy, etc (or not). I also know that cast boolit shooters often go up a thou or two over bore size. Would it be possible to use a .312 cast 80ish grain pistol bullet and Trail Boss for a plinking load? How about jacketed bullets?
