So today I took my dads frozen rusty lyman 45 lube/sizer stripped it down/ sanded /brushed /degreases/steel wool'ed/unfroze/cleaned/blued and painted. Assembly tomorrow, I ordered lube today (Lyman Supper Moly) I hope that's a good one to start with. It went well, except the bluing, I'm never satisfied with my bluing!
I have two dies for it, and the two molds to match.
Any suggestions or insight is welcome.
The molds are Ideal;
311 466 A double mold 150 gain RN bullet I believe it take a gas check. As far as I can tell I can use this for my 30-30/7.7 Jap/possibly 7.62 x 39 Not holding out hope for that!
358 246 A Single mold 147 grain RN bullet no gas check this was for 38 S&W, I suspect my dad was using it for 38 Special, which is what I hope to use it for.
I have a lot of lead Ingots (from wheel weights) but am not sure of the lead content or hardness, he could have mixed it when he made them. I could use some advise on how to figure that out, and what I should do to make it work for these bullets, and muzzle loader round balls.
I hope to at least try these bullets and see if I want to cast. It's only costing me time, $6.00 in lube, and maybe alloy to add to the lead. I have done it for black powder (muzzle loader) and just got another mold for .45 cal (.44 mold) for a round ball muzzle loader.
I see the dies for the Lyman 45 are $35.00 plus and wonder if I get more dies should I just get the Lee, as they are $25.00 or less. Not sure what the pros and cons are. Seems like I may not want the lube mess on my loading press. So please let me know if these molds are good for what I propose to use them for. I believe he used the 311 for 30-06 I slugged the Jap at 112, but for plinking I believe it will be fine, depending on if they shrink or not.
Did I read that we can not post pic? If I can I will post one of the refurbished Lube sizer. I didn't get any before pics!
Thanks Dana!
