I had a cow/calf missing this morning from the herd so I decided to pull a walk about.. The wife decided I wasnt going alone -- she is getting testy these days LOL. So I wait for 20 minutes for her to dress for the walk -- ok its cool today but not really cold but she needs her layers --- will let that go. I wasnt planning on hunting anything but the cow/calf so I only took a sidearm but it was my new to me 41 ruger..... There is a love affair in the works now LOL. We went nice and slow so we got to see tons of critters and I had 6 rounds so I was super conservative to a point I guess. She about wet herself when my friendly buck waked out to see if we had any treats. As he was walking away she ask if I had gone soft or something no way would he have even walked up in the past. I told her we are buds and I am keeping him for stud service - so now I am back to being a perv LOL...
Anyways we found the pair at one of the feeders and just watched for a while to make sure they were ok, The cow saw us and made no effort to stop eating the corn on the ground. the calf was just watching us watch them so we headed back to the house. We came around a bend in the trail and 4 does were grazing so we stopped to watch them.. well one of those girls got wet at us or something and started stomping her foot at us. Wife started snickering and said yep your whipped, just let a girl shut you down. So I turned to the doe and told her calmly, look sister today is not the day to push any buttons, it is a doe day. She just stomped at me again and I guess I chuckled too. Wife looked at me and said I dare you with a freezer full of meat lets see if the old man is still in there. I knew we were the only ones at the house today - 4H had all the others out so I was going to walk on then she really went childish on me and taunted me with I double dog dare you to put her on the ground. so without thinking it thru I pulled the pistol and shot her... she jumped straight up and fell as she came down. I go well you happy now WE get to clean it. THEN she goes "well I thought you would walk away you big dummy, what do we do now. I tell her we walk back to the house and I will drive back for her and she can gather up the knives and bowls for the goodies. We got maybe 200 ft when my phone rang and one of the adult kids ask if everything was ok or did I need some help. So I tell him we need a ride back and we have meat to process. He got there just as we got back to the doe, we loaded her and came in. By then some of the others were there and I got the "but we were not going to hunt any more this year" from the boys.... I blamed gran for pulling the double dog dare thing and we all I had to then. So as it stands now, the guys are dressing her and I will do the actual butcher work after she hangs a while.
The big let down for me is I struggled to help load her, then one of the adult boys just snatched her up and held her while the other tied her up to work on. I think age is catching up to my sense of self pride... I can farm all day if its in the seat of a tractor but the physical stuff is starting to be a pain.
