Well the regular rifle season doesn't open up here for over a month but my daughter is very excited about it. This will be he second year out with me where she will be totting my old 30-30, which she calls hers now. We've been out several times so far doing a little scouting and just enjoying getting back into the woods. We've seen some familiar signs in an area that has always been a busy one and we setup a new blind the last week of September. My partner and I have setup a half dozen trail cams
(his cams) around the area and figured it was time to get some of my own.
I have two cams being delivered today, which once here, we will head out tomorrow and set them up around the blind area. This new area that we will be hunting in is about 500 yards from last years spot, however, we found a much easier way to get access to it. Last years spot was about a 1/2 mile trek in, across two streams and through some pretty heavy cover. At my age now I'm not too keen on crossing streams and my days of hopping rock to rock are over. Luckily the streams are shallow enough where we can just walk through them. Yet this new way in follows one of the marked trails and while its a longer walk, just over 3/4 of a mile, it's easy and quiet walking with only one stream to cross. Once we get to the point of turning off the trail an into the woods, its only about a 200 yard walk to the blind.
I've been hunting many years now and I'm always excited about the upcoming season. Granted, as the years have passed by me, my hiking though the woods has been diminished. What started out as easily venturing 5 to 6 miles a day has now dropped to 2 0r 3. Albeit, seeing the excitement in my daughter for this upcoming season makes my older achy body all feel irrelevant. What used to e hoping to score the big buck, has now turned into hoping my daughter gets a shot at the big one.
I wish you all the best this season and may you enjoy it with good company. Those are the moments you will cherish forever. Best of luck to you all!
