Gobble gobble no more actually. LOL
Today was the opener of our turkey season. I had trail cams at the back food plot so I knew when the birds were coming by, and what birds were coming by. There was one with a very WIDE beard that I called Paintbrush, and that's the one I was hoping for. There was one other that had a really thin beard, but it was really LONG.
know they don't roost here, so I knew I didn't have to get up THAT early, but I was in the pop-up blind at 7:30 am. The paintbrush came in at 8am with 2 jakes but were just too far to my right. Before I could get the gun moved over, it stated to hail and they took off running for the woods. Maybe they didn't want to get hail on their bald heads, I don't know but they sure took off fast when it started! I knew they'd be back so I sat and waited - I have trail cam pics of them so I had their pattern down. Then had 3 jakes come in, and a lone hen made an appearance about once an hour eating something in the food plot.
I heard gobbles to the East of me off and on all morning. I didn't bother with any calls or decoy, since they were coming to the food plot on a regular basis. I figured that if I didn't get one today I'd break out the decoy and call tomorrow.
Honestly, I dozed off a bit, woke up and the 2 jakes and paintbrush were back. 25 yds away, the one jake must have been talking dirty to the Tom because he took off after that jake and chased him all over the food plot. never was able to catch him though. Once they settled down I sent the load of #6's on it's way. Dunno what happened, he started running towards me and to my right. With the gun on a trigger stick, all I could do is pivot and shoot. Maybe I shouldn't have, I took off a LOT of flight feathers on the right wing and most of the tail. But, he flopped over dead so I have no idea if it was the 1st or 2nd shot to kill it, I'm guessing that he was dead from the first shot and didn't know it.
Biggest bird I've ever shot. The picture makes the beard look small, it's just because the bird is so big. It weighs 27 1/4 pounds. Left spur is 1 1/2", right is 1 3/8", beard is 10 1/8" long but about 3" wide if you flatten it out a bit.
No idea how old it is.

I just realized that I don't have to get up at the buttcrack of dawn to chase the birds now! Yipee!!!
