I have a Savage Muzzleloader, ML-II, round receiver front and back of the loading port. I wanted to swap scopes and went from a 1" tube to a 30mm tube, and a while ago I put on dual dovetail bases because the scope was sliding in the front ring, and the ring was actually moving off the rear base (Leupold windadge adjustable rear base). I WAS shooting some hard recoiling loads, and the scope base just wasn't up to the stress.
I have a set of rods that come to a point. Put them in the rings and tighten the rings. As long as the points line up you are good to go. You can use them to twist in the dual dovetail rings too. So, I did that and everything was good.
Then to mount the scope I have a set of levels, I typically put one on the base, bottom half of the ring or the cutout in the receiver to load the round. Then put another one on the muzzle and clamp it down so you can then move the level at the receiver to the top turret of the scope to get the x-hairs horizontal as you tighten the scope ring caps.
I put the level on the rear base and leveled out the gun, then installed/adjusted the level on the barrel. I don't know why, but I put the receiver level on the bottom half of the scope ring. Wait a minute, WTH, it isn't lining up with the base - it isn't lever. Checked the front base, and then the front ring. none of the 4 pieces were the same "level" (side to side). I put the level on the cutout for the loading port and leveled the barrel, and installed the scope. It works just fine, but I won't be shooting past 400 yds and I won't be dialing the scope.
I wonder how many others have run across the same thing when mounting scopes on round receiver Savage rifles?
