Well since its out now I will try to cover what I know. in order of importance to me -- things may fall in different importance levels to you guys but....
1. she went to the range by herself, that may not seem bad to us that have been shooting a long time and have learned to watch for the signs... I made the rule the first time I took the boys with me and they just grabbed boxes of ammo.. Their Hornets are K hornets and mine is a Mashburn hornet -- IE mine has a longer shoulder than theirs.. But they managed to get a couple of mine slammed shut in their rifles.. When you know the report is wrong you start looking for the problem.. She did the same thing basically, grabbed a box of her ammo and a box of not her ammo...
2. not at least checking to see if the ammo was marked hunting or practice - the practice ammo we have is all turned down for summer shooting IE it is not as accurate but safe in the summer.. Hunting ammo is usually made up and tested when the temps are close to the 70s for highs.. not the high 90s..
So all that said, she took a box of the stuff I loaded to long range class shooting.. IE warm loads for the lower temps in Lapua brass.. I did test them in her rifle during the early spring and she shot some too.. I guess thats why she thought they would be ok that day. At least she stopped at 30 shots - 10 of the last of the practice rounds and 20 of the hot loads. I like she said pep talk instead of the snot slinging fit I did throw.. I was good about it and took her to the gun room to blow up but after I showed her a blown up 30-06 action I keep stashed away and tried to explain just how close she could have been to having parts of her face blown off she got it I hope. I was not present when the 30-06 went but I knew the guy and his tendency to start at max and work his way up... After helping him beat his bolt open twice in one day I baled on shooting with him again. Most people look at the 223 and think oh its a small cartridge it really cant do that much damage can it....... At times I just thank the Lord he likes me, I have been in and around a few real idiots that have managed to blow all kinds of things up and I am still here in one piece more or less..
In the end I swapped out her bolt head and reset her headspace and we are now back to somewhere close to what she had. She has shot it a few times and I dont think she hurt the bore because it still shoots nice. I will open her old bolt head up to use with the 6.8 brass and have a spare. I think that covers the parts I know for sure.. I am sure there are/were details left out but its history now.
