Was up to our lake place over the weekend and son, DIL and granddaughters joined us for the weekend. My mission Saturday was to get our 4yr old granddaughter to catch her first fish. We launched about 10am with mom, dad, both granddaughters, and me. Ran about 30mins downstream to a spot I know very, very well and knew I could at least connect with some SMB if nothing else. Sure enough, the 4yr old landed a 6" or 7" SMB shortly after we started trolling. She reeled it in and I removed the hook and asked if she wanted to hold it for a picture, no way. Told her I would hold it and she could stand close for a picture, already in tears about it, but she agreed to stand close...
I reset gear and while trolling found a school of rainbow at 30' - 35' so brought the downriggers up to 28' - 30' and we hooked up in less than 5,mins. She reeled it in but it came undone before it was in netting range. Told my granddaughter not to worry we'd catch another one. Reset again, turned around and trolled back through that school and was rewarded with a solid takedown that stuck. She reeled it in and I scooped a nice 2lb, 3oz rainbow and she had no problem holding the scale for a pic.
We fished a little while longer but the school had moved and two other boats had come in where we were. With my mission accomplished, and temperature then 100°, I suggested we pull gear and head for a sandy beach so they could get out and play in the water while I took care of my 2mo old granddaughter who was NOT happy about the temperature. A boat rag (old terry cloth towels) dipped in the cool lake water and wrung tight helped her disposition a lot.
About 5hrs later, and right as we sat down for dinner, a hellacious thunderstorm blew in and dumped 1.5" of rain with constant thunder and lightning over the next 2hrs. I've seen some storms in my life, and this was a doozy, especially for this part of the country.
