I been looking at heavy 30 cal bullets for a few hours and just don't understand some things. I understand but don't. I have yet to see where Horn, Berger or Sierra , list a bullet for a 1:8 twist rate. Im no fool and im sure the 200 to 230 grain will work but here is the crazy part. Hornady has load data for the 300 PRC on line. They used a 1:8 twist test barrel for them and offer the 212 and 225 ELD's in factory ammo. Then if you look at their bullets,, they say 1:10 is recommended or 1:9. Berger is just as bad and they say 1:11 minimum on some. I can see how people gets confused over mixed info and I have used many bullets that claims you need a certain twist to stabilize them,,, in a way differ twist // had very good success.
Im decent but some things, sends me for a loop. Is it really about the FPS that some bullets are being pushed to over come the makers suggested twist rate? Length of barrel? Im asking because spending money on bullets that isn't cheap,, sucks. If it was 22 to 284 cal,, I would never even ask and the big 30 cal is all new to me. My rifle will have a 1:8.
I didn't want to order 500 of one bullet and was going to get three differ brands in semi close weight. ELD-M 225, Sierra match king in 230 and maybe a box of Berger 215 or so weight class. Something else is in my mind. The 28 nosler plain out hates a 175 ELD-M. It wouldn't matter if you put 50 grains to 200 grains of powder in it,, pressure will go through the roof. I never figured out if it was due to the long bearing surface of the bullet or what. It will eat the 175 grain bullet in SMK, with authority. Thinking back now, the 175 ELD may have been .0001 more in DIA than the SMK and for some reason,, that is popping up in my head. That is the only ELD bullet that has gave me problems, also.
Im pretty sure that im thinking to hard and the so called 1:9 to 1:10 suggested twist will work great,, when I push them to about 2900 or more FPS. Take my numbers with a grain of salt and my eyes are hurting from hours of reading and didn't make good notes.
