Ive been fighting with not one but two 6.5 Creeds for awhile now. Im not to darn sure that my problem is the die, all along. I will try my best to give all the info that I can. Die is simple RCBS 2 die set. Shell holder is a RCBS. All is clean and made sure of that. Press is RCBS and made sure the cut out where you put the shell holder in,, is clean. Ram is clean and don't let my stuff get dirty to a certain point and use it. No spent primer anvils or whatever,, caught up in it.
OK, here is what has me puzzled and no wonder I'm struggling getting bug hole,, constant groups in the creed. I put ten FLS cases in the new Hornady neck turning tool,, to understand how to chuck them up properly and get a feel for it. SOB and I must have a mile of wobble in them and Ray Charles could see that. Brass must be 15 thou out of concentric or more. I triple checked my eyes and no need for a damn gauge. I set the FLS die so it would float and lock ring wasn't even touching the top of press. Sized two cases again. Same thing. Ok, lets paint a fired case black from top to bottom and size it with the die floating. Die removed or lightened the black on one side of the case and not uniform at the case web. I set the die many differ ways. One full turn above the shell holder to camming the press over. Pretty much the same painted surface removed on one side of the case. Heck, lets do another fired case and one that I already had sized. Same thing again and way out of being concentric or close. Like I said, you can see it with your own eyes and not like it is .001 or so. A gauge shows that or .0001 and telling ya,, its way out. Im I missing something and this may be the reason I have two shots out of 6 to burn a single hole and the rest goes south,, for no reason. I know damn well that I can shoot better than the average bear and weigh the charges to perfect. I use good brass, match primers, good powder, Berger, SMK and ELD bullets.
It has to be the die that is not putting the cases back to concentric. What would a bad shell holder do? Could the shell holder cause this? Ive had it for 26 years and loaded thousands of 22-250 , 243, 308 bla bla cases with it. Guess it could be worn out but have my doubts. I also noticed when trimming the case's in my RCBS trim pro,, That most doesn't seem to align up perfect with the pilot. I tossed that in the trash because most of the time you have to jiggle cases around a tad when chucking up in the shell plate to get right,, anyway. This should have told me something but didn't lesion to what the tool was telling me,, all along.
Im going to look and see if I have a few pieces of BRAND new brass for the creed. Chuck them up in the neck turning tool and see if they wobble around like an egg. If they don't,, I will measure them. Then I will set the FLS die to where it is off the shell holder paper thick and size the case. Then see what run out on case concentricity,, I have. DONT KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO. Never had a bad set of RCBS dies in my life but guess it could be my first???
