We went to the lease today to look at the hogs and hunt mushrooms and check on the turkeys. The stinking things caused me to revert back to my dads way of hunting... The big thing is the hogs got thinned but not nearly enough.. we had a nice bed of ramps growing up there, about 200 sq yds and the hogs tore it up.. the only ones that got saved were behind a fence made from reinforcing wire. I did lose my sportsman's conduct for a bit but we thinned the stinking things down.. the tribe has enough for several weeks now. We had a sow walk in with six piglets and I shot a piglet in the hindquarters and it went to squealing -- we used it as bait... mom and the rest of the piglets didn't make it along with 8 others. The boys got good at taking the piglets and I may have sounded like Jerry Miculek at times, I went thru more ammo today than I have in months.. We were in a barn about 100yds away from the "bait" and it got to a point I ran out of loaded clips... I wasn't looking for a clean kill shot just to kill them.. I had a lot of time in the ramp bed and it just hit me the wrong way... I know when I ran out of ammo the aunt said that was enough make the call. So I called to let her know there were hog down and she might need a second truck, then we went with the aunt to just pick whatever we could find. Me and the boys were locked in on the poke and mushrooms her -- she was after anything eatable LOL. We (us men) found 2 laundry bags full of poke and she did the rest basically. We did find a few mushrooms but she was on them like a pointer on a bird. We ended up just walking with her and the boys played fetch.. she would point and they would gather. I guarantee they are tired of hearing don't pull it just pinch it off. they got to having their knives out before they got to the mushroom which got the don't be walking around with your knives out you could fall on them.. I was about to call uncle when she said she needed to go to the barn.. there is an outhouse there... And while we were there the boys talked her into lunch.. Then after lunch we - ok, at lunch we decided we had had enough fun and we needed to beat the older kids home form school anyway. So we picked up the hog we kept and came in, she made some of the greens for supper while the boys and I hung the hog and cut her in half.
