Turkey season starts Sat morning and yes we have more storms scheduled for then LOL. Talked to the local ranger and he says we may have the best population for the county here.. So now I will be a tad more restrictive maybe, not sure yet. He said in this county the population as a whole is way down from last year due to several things from late storms to predators over the winter. He did say they caught several poaching them when deer hunting too. I ask is he knew about Pawnee county so he called the ranger there and was told poachers have been really busy this year up there. So that means we may have a punk season there too.. The daughters are not going to be happy with the news. They hunt deer but not like they hunt turkey, deer is a fun thing, the turkeys are serious for both of them. The shooter doesn't hunt turkey except to guide and call for her son. This was his first real year hunting up with the "big guys" and now I may talk him into hunting here this year to make sure he gets a first tom at least. If the poachers have hit the lease it will be a big hit and miss affair there. Been reworking him a 20ga Moss 500 for this spring and he is pretty salty with it setting.. Its really to heavy for him to shoot it otherwise, the fact it has recoil reducers in the mag tube and buttstock effect its weight greatly but it has little recoil so he can shoot it several times before his shoulder gives out I shot it once with the 3in shells and forgot it was cut to fit him.. got a nice rosy cheek out of it LOL.. that's the reason for the recoil reducers....
I know we have one nice tom here but I may make him off limits if I can find enough legal jakes for the kids to hunt, to them a legal jake is a tom.. The girls wont hunt a jake period, they will hold out for a tom so they may be hunting the lease only. Big thing at the lease is one will be spotter/caller and armed with a rifle in case they run into some hogs but they cant hunt the birds with the rifle... Who knows we could get a tom and fresh pork together on one trip.
I am taking the youngest grand daughter out here st morning to see what we can find.. I did tell her the pickings may be slim but a legal jake is hers if she gets a shot. Got the ground blind set up near a known trail so the birds will get used to it. I know we will see some turkeys I just cant say well will see any males...
