Every time you turn around on how much power or bullet for self defense,, I ran a simple test. Maybe this will shut some up but doubt it. Why some don't get off their butt and run a test like Doc, Myself or a few others does, I don't know. They just ask or read books, instead of doing it. My test was the P89 9mm at 20 feet by tape measure. Box was packed full and tight with two very heavy hotel towels and the long ones. One regular towel and one baby blanket. All was folded four times so that is 16 layers and 6 1/2 inches thick. Four layers of cardboard box, milk jug full of water and landscaping brick. Load was 124 XTP and 5.5 grains of Power Pistol and 1065 FPS.
First shot was with dry towels and bullet passed through with no problem and slammed the brick. Found nothing but a flatten piece of lead and no copper jacket. Blue-Dot asked if I would wet the towels down and do it again. Sure and why not. I soaked the towels until water was pouring out of them and lightly hand rung out. Put fresh jug of water and brick back. SOB and the bullet went through with more force and blew the brick out in the yard. Brick was weak from the first hit but it blew the top off and don't have a clue where the bullet went.
I know damn well someone will come up with towels isn't clothes or some kinda crap. Got news for them and 6 1/2 inches of packed / layered towels, jug of water and brick is damn sure more than a regular person puts on in winter or summer. Just like ElkHunter said,, bullets is not being compared and most is fine if you can place the shots. Any damn pistol from 22 to 45 cal is fine but the 9mm and 38/357 is my favorite. A good pistol is very capable of busting a milk jug,, out to 100 yards and 60 to 80 yards is my stopping place. I can do 100 but not consistent. The 124 and 115 XTP has passed through two deer at way more yardage than and self defense issue a normal person will encounter.
Attachment Deleted Not sure where my pictures went but this is with water logged towels and the brick. Brick was pushed up tight to back side of jug. The hole in box was from the first test with dry towels and the box wasn't setting like that. I rotated the box, after the dry towel test.
