The girls wanted to hunt today with their bows and be the first women this year to take a deer with a bow. The somehow talked this into happening and I was on board at the time. Ok the oldest is 16 and the youngest is 11 and mine is in the middle. The oldest is using her real compound bow, she is good with it too. She shoots in local competitions and is always near the top of the board. The other two are using crossbows but its kewl between them. I took my daughter, dad has the youngest and the oldest's dad went with her. Anyway it is 27° right now (10am) and it was colder earlier but they were ready on time. Mine actually woke me to get ready, my clock was set but she thought I needed the extra time. Everyone knew what stand they were hunting from, in fact they left their bows in the stands overnight no they could get in the stands with less noise. Everyone tinkled before we left and we all grabbed a thermos, dad is stuck drinking hot chocolate ROFLOL.
Anyway about 9 mine ask if it was ok to just go in and wait until it warms some. I was all over that, I was shaking literally and I was bundled up really well. WE leave the bow and are coming back up the trail when we hear something in the brush go nuts. I just knew we had scared a deer and it was running. Wrong the oldest had stuck a doe and that was what we heard running toward the front of the property. Anyway we get in and I just start to unthaw and my brother in law comes in and asks if we can help track her deer. So we get dressed and I grab the thermal imaging thing dad has to find downed deer. So back to where I told him we heard the nose and we find a blood trail but its really thin. I use the thermal thing and we see it laying about 40 yards on in the brush. He says we may need to wait a bit to make sure its dead. Well that did get to happen, my son and HIS dog went to papa's for breakfast and I guess gran told him, we were out helping track a shot deer. All that to say the dog followed him and when he saw us the dog was with him. I told him if the dog scares the deer I will be beating two butts and he grabbed her collar and we sat there for a minute. I guess the deer did a dying kick because the dog was gone in a flash. We chased after her and got to her and she was laying down looking at the dead doe nose to nose. Was cute but I was mad she even came. We got her dragged out to the trail while the boy and dog went for an atv.
So as it is my daughter and I wimped out, the oldest got her doe hanging behind the shop. Dad and the youngest are still out on the far back side, he was the smart one and took a radio. We will hear about not taking one later I am sure. Anyway we just finished a pancake and egg breakfast with my hubby and oldest, they are off to check on the property he oversees. The rest of us are waiting on the others to either come in or call for a pickup. But this is the first hard freeze and it is COLD, my toes were numb when we got back in the second time, winter sucks.
