Hello all,
Not sure if we've covered this yet, but I want to know what your definition of accuracy is? I know it's different for every person, caliber, firearm type, ECT., but maybe a few general questions will kick off a good thread and help me learn a bit and set new goals.
A small background: I grew up in the backwoods of PA, typical whitetail shots were under 75 yards unless you hunted fields(we didn't). The top calibers there were the 30-30, 30-06, and the 270. My grandfather's idea of accuracy with his 30-06(scoped) was on a pie plate at 50 yards, my dad's idea with his 12 gauge slug gun(open sight) was on a pie plate at 100 yards, mine with my 44-40(open sight) was 4" at 75 yards, my 30-06(scoped) was 1" at 100 yards. The more I learned, the more I wanted to shrink my numbers, but I never knew where to stop chasing the ghost.
I never really had the opportunity to practice skills beyond 150 yards until later in life, and I guess I still don't know what to expect. I love to read about picklehead's skills shooting microscopic groups at long ranges, but I'm not sure if that's the standard or possible with me or my equipment, lol.
I'll list off a few rifle and handgun stats I consider standard for me, feel free to add your own stats or thoughts on accuracy, perhaps we can all learn something.
Remington 788 .308: 100 yards 1/4" group is great for me, 200 yards 2.5" group is great for me, if I can hit the 10" gong at 300 yards 4 out of 5 times, I'm good.
Parker Hale 30-06: 100 yards 1/4", 200 yards 2", 300 yard gong 5 out of 5.
Remington 770 7mm-08: 100 yards 1/2", 200 yards 3", 300 yard gong 3 out of 5.(took a lot of work to get there).
Rossi M92 44-40(open sight): 50 yards 2.5", 75 yards 3.5", 100 yards 4".
Ruger GP100(6") 10 yards 1 large hole, 25 yards 2", 50 yard 6" gong 5 out of 6.
Ruger P94 .40: 10 yards 2", 25 yards 5", 50 yard gong 6 out of 10.
I'm sure I could tweak all of these numbers with different loads and more practice, and I'd like to expand on my range, but I guess I don't know what to expect.
Thanks,
bobcat2
