O.K. guys and gals. I need some help for a buddy of mine.
He's relatively new to serious rifle shooting, and he brought his Rem 700 Varmint .308 over yesterday. He is shooting Factory Federal Gold Medal Match 168g SMK's. Gun is stock. He's getting smacked in the nose by the scope and I told him to come over before he develops bad habits. Gun wouldn't group better than 5"-6" at 100 yds. Well, long story short, it's operator error for the bad groups, NOT the gun. HS Precision stock on the rifle. There is no Monte Carlo cheekpiece, and it is a hinged magazine, not blind.
BUT
His head is really narrow. His eyes are close together, and his eyes are pretty high above his cheekbone. What he had was a strap on cheek piece to raise the comb of the rifle to get a good cheek weld, but that pushed his eye even further off the centerline of the rifle. He was having to tip his head to the right and twist his head to the right at the same time to get his eye to line up with the scope.
His eye was 3" from the scope, but the tip of his nose was 1" from the scope. That is WITHOUT the strap on cheek piece on the stock. He also has to have the majority of the buttpad in the air over his shoulder to get his eyes somewhat parallel to the ground. Basically from the bottom recoil pad screw to the tow of the recoil pad is the only part that is touching his shoulder.
So he needs a stock that has an adjustable (vertically) recoil pad, AND a cheek piece that is adjustable both vertically and horizontally to get his head further to the right.
Does anybody have any suggestions on options for him without him having to spend more than $500 for the stock? The gun will be used for hunting maybe 5% of the time, and bench shooting/practice the rest of the time. Bipod/rear bag.
I'm leaning towards telling him to buy a cheap ass wood stock, calling Graco for their adjustable cheekpiece hardware and getting a Jones anyway recoil pad adjuster. That's what I'd do if it was a shotgun, but don't know how they'd work on a rifle.
Any and all help would be appreciated.
FYI, with the Factory FGM Match 168g ammo, in a 5-15 mph variable wind switching from 9 to 3 every 30 sec to a minute, I shot a 1/2 moa 100 yd group, and at 200 yds, the bullets impacted not more than a .150" vertical variance, but up to 2" horizontal variance (not adjusting for the wind when shooting). So, the gun will shoot. Trigger is currently set at 3# 6 oz. He shot my 1.5# Jewell trigger and decided that his needs to be lightened a lot because he's spending too much time squeezing.
When he shoots, his shoulder is shoved back about 3"-4", then his head follows suit then his head follows suit like a bobble head doll. He was having to put the side of his lower jaw on the stock to get proper eye placement in the scope. We will work on shooting form once we get a stock to fit.
HELP!!!!!
