Hello all,
Picked up a K&M flash hole uniformer, figured I'd give a few thoughts on it...
I have a Lyman unit I liked, but the problems with it were just too annoying to purchase another. The tip wasn't replaceable, so you had to buy the whole unit again, the centering cone falls off and is easily lost, and the worst was the tip was pressed into the shaft. After some use, the tip started spinning in the shaft, I tried crimping and silver soldering it in place with no luck, after that, I wasn't too keen on another one.
I also have an RCBS unit, it worked great for deburring flash holes, but that was it. The point was too steep, causing issues for me to find the flash hole quickly, the centering cone was easily lost, and it didn't uniform the flash hole.
Now that I have the K&M unit, I've found my favorite so far.
Pros: The handle threads on to the shaft, the tip is threaded for easy replacement, and you don't have to buy the whole unit when it dulls, and the tip is slightly larger than the shaft so the centering cone doesn't fall off and get lost. The shaft length is a little short, but it makes finding the flash hole a bit easier.
Cons: It has a "hood" over the cutter, which will collect shavings over time and need periodic cleanings. They only offer a steel cutter head replacement, they offer a carbide cutter, but it isn't a replaceable cutter, you have to buy the whole unit, and the handle is a bit uncomfortable, but I can put other brand handles on it.
Overall, I prefer the K&M unit, maybe with time, they'll offer a carbide cutter.
Thanks,
