Ok, it looks like the new hunting grand daughter has somehow wrangled a Short action Axis in 223 and a 221FB pencil thin barrel. She used the 300AAC medium heavy barrel this year and got a doe this morning but all I have heard was it was to heavy to carry and she didn't like shooting prone(my stomach got dirty). I have a Black Light weight Thumbhole Laminated Boyd's stock for the Axis so I am thinking set it up with the 223 and let her shoot that and if all is good swap the stock for the 221 barrel... If she wants to try the 221 we can set that up and dad will buy the stock.... I don't need another 223 barrel unless its a super shooter and very low round count.
So question is - anyone have experience with the 221 -- I have a 17FB and even though they are close I have never thought about hunting anything larger than a yote with it. She is talking about deer with this either way it is set up. She is a first year hunter but has shot with us for a while, I think with practice and a good load deer will be ok with either. We have bullets from 39gr to 90gr in .224 and plenty of powders to try. Any ideas on where to start with the 221 - other than the book - Tom did her like we did him..... handed her a reloading book and said get to reading, her expression was worth the look from her mom.
Ok, she is peeking over shoulder and fussing that at how I wrote some of this -- ok perfect grammar is not me, I speak beat up redneck LOL. You want perfect English try England.
