The hunt was Monday/Tuesday. I don't know how many hunters there were, I heard 150 or so, for the 3800+ acre state park. We were supposed to take the first 3 deer we saw, but only one could be a buck (one antler over 3" long is considered a buck).
Monday there were 6 of us hunting.
One buddy got a antlered deer, they measured it, moved the hair at the base, re-measured it and the one antler that it had measured 3 1/4"......
I shot a doe and a button buck
Another buddy shot 2 button bucks
2 others in the group either got busted by a deer and couldn't shoot, or the deer that they saw didn't give them a shot.
Today one guy that didn't get one yesterday didn't come back.
I got a basket racked 8 point that squirted out of a thicket when another hunter walked on the opposite side of it. It was running towards me, went down the gully and stopped. Hold the x-hairs on it, squeeze, click. WTH?? With the deer about 50 yds away I held my breath as I racked another shell into the 870. It looked my way, ran about 20 yds and stopped again. This time there was a BANG and it rolled to the bottom of the gully..... Between the gully and the Multiflora Rose bushes that are all over there, we got pretty well whupped dragging the deer out.
The same buddy that yesterday shot the one antlered deer, shot another buck today, one nub of an antler, and the other side was about 3/4" dia but that was busted off about 1" above the skull. Or it was shot off, we don't know, so that was checked as an antlerless deer.
The one buddy that shot the 2 button bucks yesterday shot a forkhorn today.
The other guy shot 2 does.
So all in all, we did pretty good. Yesterday there were only 54 deer checked in, we left today before the hunt was over so we don't know how many were checked in today, but the amount of hunters was 50% of day 1 or less.
