My wife was whining last week about it being so rainy...and she was tired of being in the house...so I said, maybe I should find us a cheap hog hunt in TX...she said, 'when are we leaving?'...
So I booked a 2 day hunt with Crazyhorseconsulting out of Olney TX, not far from where RiverRider has his lease... He hunts out of blinds early in the morning and in the evening until after dark...
We left home at 4am and by 2pm were in Olney, by 5pm we were settled in the cabin,
We had to go feed some cake to the resident buffalo herd before we left the parcel where the cabin is located...
You can see that things are hot and dry!!
By 6pm we were in the blind watching 2 feeders where a big hog had been taken a couple weeks ago.. we sat until past dark but all we saw was a pile of deer!
When we left the blind Randall said he wanted to check a feeder on the other side of the property to see if any hogs had been using it...we drove over there and when the lights from the truck hit the feeder we could see 2 hogs under it...one bolted right away. Randall stopped the truck about 100yds from the feeder and I got out and got a shot off just as the second pig was ready to leave.. He showed no sign of being hit, but I felt like I was dead on him. We drove up to the feeder and could not find any blood where he was standing..but when I shined my headlight across the fence on the trail he took, it was a regular blood bath... Couldn't go far bleeding like that...and he didn't...about 40yds.
It was a young boar...Randall guessed it at 140, I guessed it at 150...when we put it on the scale it was 162# . It will be good eating for sure!
That 180gr accubond from my 338-06ai hit him right behind the shoulder...and sorta wrecked the whole engine room...
Anyway, it was exciting and we were hoping that my wife would get a chance before we were done...we hunted the next morning and we saw a huge boar on the way to the blind..it was in a neighbors field about 500yds from our blind...but it never came in.. Saw more deer and turkey...that morning.. Hunted that evening and the next morning without seeing a hog...but we did see lots of wildlife and it was a hoot hunting with Randall...
My wife got over her cabin fever and we got some sausage meat too....it was a great trip and we will do it all again about the end of next February..
