Hello all,
Found a slightly better way to store my ammo...
My typical method of storage are those media book shelves, about 6' tall and 12" wide, I think they have 6 shelves each. It works fine for the most part, 1 caliber per shelf, but I'm always looking to buy a better mouse trap.
Most of my hand gun ammo doesn't sit around long enough to worry about moisture or oxidation, since I run a dehumidifier in the loading room, and my cases are waxed, but it does cross my mind. Another concern of mine is I like to keep at least 1k rounds per handgun caliber around so I can just do my bulk loading when the snow flies, and the shelves weren't made for that kind of weight.
I picked up the MTM .45 acp box the other day to give it a try, if anything, it's cheaper than buying a 50 cal. ammo can and 7, 45-100 ammo boxes individually. Construction seems pretty good for a plastic box, but I think it could be brittle in cold weather. It has an o-ring seal, double latches, and double lock holes. It holds 700 rounds with no room for anything else. For bulk storage, I think I'll like it, but I don't see myself dragging it to the range, 700 .45 acp rounds are heavy, lol.
I also have their range box which is the plastic 50 cal. can with a tray that I do take to the range, I can usually pack 100 45 acp, 100 .40, 100, 380, and 2 50 round boxes of 357s in it, and use the tray for 6 magazines and my wrist mounted brass catcher. I'd like to see a taller model of this one so I could get a little more ammo in it, or use the caliber specific boxes with a tray to hold magazines as well.
I didn't realize how much 45 acp I could burn up in a short time with both the hand gun and carbine out at the same time, lol.
They make a few specific boxes that work fine with other calibers, 380 works with 9mm, 40 works with 45, but they stamped them with 1 caliber, making it tricky with multiple boxes. I know I can put my own label on them, but I like everything dress right dress, lol.
I see they offer a 308 model now that should work on anything that has the 308 parent, and may suffice for 7.62x39 unless they make that too.
Overall, I can see myself getting a few of these, which will free up shelf space, since they are sealed, I have no concerns storing them on the floor under the bench.
Thanks,
bobcat2
