I got a call from a man and he was asking me about seating depth. His load pretty much sucked at 50 and 100 yards. ( 1 inch and worse )
His question was. How far off the lands do I go to get this bullet to shoot well. Ok,,, you can play all you want with that bullet and .002 to .080 off the lands , IS NOT GOING TO MAKE IT BETTER. That barrel does not like that bullet and that is plain and simple. He didn't care for my answer but its the truth.
Ive spent countless hours and money on chasing my tail around and if you have a decent barrel and no headspace issues,,, YOU GOT TO FIND THE PROPPER BULLET THAT THE BARREL LOVES. Sure, there is a node of accuracy and sweet spot for crazy accuracy ,,, but that's with a bullet and powder that shows promise ,,, to mess with.
I may be wrong but like I said,, ive spent many hours or weeks,,, chasing holes with a certain bullet in a certain rifle and if it shot 1.5 at 100 yards and tried a few different powders,,, its not going to get better by seating the bullet .002 to .030 ,,, back and forth. Waste all the money you want and time,, its not going to get any better and if it does,,, it will not be by much.
He was shooting a 150 SST in his 30-06 and told him to try a different bullet and not another SST. His reply was,,, them are some good bullets. Yeah, sounds like it and some or most rifles hate them. Hell, some hate any short or long bearing surface bullet and got to find the one that the pipe likes. That's why my dumb butt has about 170 boxes of different bullets on the shelf.
Most of the time, its not the powder or primer,,, its the bullet. Food for thought and bust my chops if you disagree,, it doesn't hurt my feelings a bit.
