Hello all,
Been damn busy this year, haven't done much shooting other than handguns. I had to go to confined space training, and as luck would have it, there was a gun shop across the street from the training center. it was one of those small units, the type you feel obligated to buy something just because you're probably the first and only one in there for the day.
I yaked with the owner for a good two hours about this and that, he had a Remington 788 in .243 there, I kinda wanted it, but I don't have a soft spot for the .243, and judging by the price, he knew what a 788 was capable of. While bragging up my 788 in .308, he mentioned he loved hunting ground hogs with his, and his bullet of choice was a Hornady 110 grain v-max over IMR 4198, he said "the carcasses take care of themselves", which I assume means there isn't much left. I bought my obligatory box of v-max bullets and left.
Last weekend, I loaded up a ladder test of the 110's, this week I hope to give the .308 the scrubbing it deserves, and my goal is to test them this weekend. I also loaded up a second identical ladder for my buddy's TC Venture Varmint in hopes to find something that the rifle can put two bullets in the same zip code with... that's a whole other story.
My .308 seems to like about any bullet, from 130 to 180, it's major hangup is powder, it loves Win 760, and not much else. I couldn't find a load for the 110's that combined the two, but if it shows potential, I'll dig deeper, I did check out"Steve's Pages" by Yogurt after the fact, I keep forgetting that handy tool is there.
Anybody play with lite bullets in the .308 and 30-06? What was your experience? Any major problems/pit falls to watch out for?
I'll update this thread after I get a chance to try them.
Thanks,
bobcat2
