I am so OUT of shape, it isnt even funny, its positively pitiful. Losing strength, losing muscle, losing tone, short of "wind", and no flexibility anymore.
when young? i was in great shape though, which makes it all the more ironic. (i am sur smoking a pack or two a day helps me stay in shape, right? LMAO)
anyways? when I was young, we had to actually amuse ourselves. No cell phones, video games were just starting, most people didnt have cable TV... You have to be pretty BRED i guess, for 2 kids to have a "who can hold their breath longer underwater" game, but... as a kid we did this. Older, in my 20s?? my little brother was a pre-teen, and i introduced him to the game in our own pool.
i just learned this, and immediatey tried it, it works...
you dont just HOLD your breath... you first "hyperventilate" yourself a little. This does NOT put more oxygen into your blood as many free divers think when thy practice it. Instead, it actually LOWERS your CO2 content of your blood.
Your body does not make you feel an "urgent" need to take a breath when the oxygen is low... your body monitors your carbon dioxide (co2) level... when the co2 level RISES to the threshold point? Your body makes you feel it is "urgent" to come for air.
the PROBLEM with this technique? is that once you get good at it... your co2 in your blood is so LOW that it takes time for it to rise high enough you feel a need to breathe... so long in fact, that th oxygen level in your blood drops low enough you black out. (obviously if you black out spontaneously underwater? you are about dead if no one is "spotting" you)
my "time" i can hold my breath now is pitifully SHORT compared to what i did when young... but, after reading this, i tried it several times... my times were more or less all close to one another.
I then hyperventilated THEN held my breath? Yeah... added like 20 seconds to my "time".
===========================================================================================
i always wondered "how" some kids coul hold their breath until they turned blue or actually passed out from it (i tried it, and could not do it, lol)
now i know... they were MAD, and adrenaline (epinephrine) makes you hyperventlate somewhat... so whn the kid got mad enough he finaly held his breath? his co2 was LOW, and he could thn hold his breath long enough to turn blue or pass out.

it works... i JUST timed myself and did a "full" timed one-minute. I havent been able to do THAT in a long time... around 40-45 seconds?? i thought i was about done... but... was able to hold off for 5 seconds... 5 seconds... net thing you know, i just HAD to wait 5 more seconds to hit the full minute, lol...
it takes some of the "urgency" out of the need to breathe when you are getting close... and the "urgency" you feel? it comes and goes...
60 to 90 seconds used to be the beginnings of "respectable" breath holding underwater as a kid... it was considered moderately impressive to hit the full 2 minute mark.
===============================================================================================
i was doing it in my 20s cos i was into fighting? and when your grappling opponent gets his ARMS wrapped around your throat?? once you are used to it, the idea practicing is to stay calm, take a deep breath, and see how long you can hold your breath...
... this gives you a minute or more to try to GET OUT and not have to tap out and lose, LMAO.

funny true story:
when i quit drinking in my early 20s?? I spent more time around my little brother, and took it upon myself to give him some "direction" since i ws so much older than him. My mom was all happy we were "getting along" and doing things together, lol (you know how moms are)
my little brother needed to learn how to fight and generally "roughhouse around" as all men shoul do growing up, its a rite of passage. As i discovered "grappling" instead of boxing or wrestling? we naturally practiced moves on each other. Once again "mom" thought this was wonderful, we were "bonding".
so... we were both interested in chokes... I was grappling with him, and i remember saying "hy! check THIS sh!t out..." and wrapped my legs around his neck and throat, trying my best to do it like it had been shown to ME...
HE responded by doing it BACK to me. neither of us knew what we were doing, so it took some wiggling and repositioning to get th choke(s) sinked in good. We BOTH got a few good "gagging" breaths in, until we both seemed to have the chokes on half decent... either of us wanted to tap out and give up. We were both smiling, and practically giggling...
who could hold their breath longer?
=========================================================================================
THIS was the immaculate momnt MOM came downstairs, and freaked out, because she said we were both "turning blue" and she couldnt get either of us to let go with our legs around each thers necks, LMAO...
it took "some convincing" to mom, from booth of us, that it was "mutual", ad we explained we would tap each other to give up, it was just a GAME...
STILL took a week or two to get MOM to let us roughhouse again, LMAO
