I think I mentioned here I had a guy who wanted my old Sears metal lathe. I thought he was a nut job but it turns out he is a Sears collector and dang he has some really nice looking stuff he has rebuilt. Tonight Tom and I ran over to appease the guy (reads get him to quit calling before something ugly happens) we got there and he was all about showing me his collection. We were impressed to say the least, everything was in period correct paint and most had period correct tooling. Whole wall of drill presses from the big floor models to the bench top jobs. Even had a few that were converted belt drive (steam driven). Anyway he has a smaller Sears unit that he has been using to make parts and pieces for the stuff he works on. Over in the corner sat the one he wanted to trade me (with me giving some boot) covered in a fender cover. So we go over and its used but not abused by any means, oily and dirty from use and setting. He has seen mine and he wasn't interested in most of my tooling (all after market) but I do have some genuine Sears stamped stuff. All that to say this, we traded and I got a good deal even with paying some boot....
Its a Grizzly G0776 = 13in x 40in and it has DRO setting on top. I can see hitting the local Vo-Tech for some classes on the DRO. According to the guy its a first gen DRO and he never learned to use it. I have limited experience but I am more than willing to hit a class or four... So no fishing sat as per plans, we will be moving the lathes, he has no way to load or unload either so he is renting a small forktruck for his end. We will load and haul this one to him and he will load that one so we can bring it home. The bestest thing about this one is it is pure 240V not the 3 phase like the sears. I can unhook the 3 phase converter now. I will be down a few weeks just rewiring and giving the new toy a serious cleaning.
I let him run the old one for about an hour so he could see just what he is getting... she is old and while not tight she is not loose either. He is going to refurbish her anyway he can buy new bronze sliders and reset it after he polishes the rails. The women have already made faces at us over talk at the table ---- new toy talk and all the stuff we may be able to do here now.... I am buying some its dedicated tooling, not right for his period pieces and some say china on them.... As long as they are of decent quality that wont matter to me. Here is a picture of one - not this one, I didn't think to do it and besides
My phone may have camera feature but it takes poor pictures, so I don't even bother trying. pretty much the same one but not as dirty LOL and the tooling is off some, this one has 4 jaw chuck and a few other differences, biggest is no table so I will need to beef up the table here for it.
