Weatherby mags are pretty darn hot in factory ammo and best to load them near max if not at max to make them shoot good. I love all weatherby mags but for some odd reason, the 240 will push the belt back or do something to the case head that will not allow the brass to fit in a shell holder. Before any one starts harping on running it to hot, you need to think and not jump to conclusions.
Its not just my rifle and happens in many factory rifles WITH FACTORY ROUNDS. The chamber length is different in Mark 5's and the newer vanguard series 2. Both does this and ive been thinking for days about what may cause this problem. Weatherby brass is some good stuff and factory rounds are loaded to SAAMI standards, I guess. Ok, shoot some factory 240 rounds in a Mark 5 and then try to chamber the spent brass in new or another 240 rifle,,,, I bet my life the bolt will not shut.
Since this takes place, I wonder if the belt or case head is being messed up due to headspace. We all know if you size a case down to much, it pushes the shoulder back to far and most brass will show signs of case head separation real fast if ran hot or separated the head after loading it again. Maybe, just maybe, the Weatherby brass is stronger and instead of showing signs of separation, it pushes the belt back or swells the case head, due to crazy chamber lengths and high pressure.
I could under stand if someone bought new brass and crammed it full of powder and was being stupid. This isn't the case at all and I bought 2 boxes of factory ammo when getting my 240. 30 out of 40 cases was useable after shooting them. I hate to say this, but I run my 257 hotter than a coal fire and never had a problem with brass life or cases fitting in a shell holder. I have plenty of Weatherby mags that I don't talk about much but the 240 is the only one that does this.
It isn't my shell holder either and have a # 3 RCBS and a #2 Lyman that I opened up a tad to except 240 brass that was barely, barely snug going in. Some once fired factory rounds WILL NOT EVEN COME CLOSE TO FITTING IN EITHER.
Think about it and amuse me, because im totally lost on this one.
