This could go in a different place but have questions that would fit in three different places, so I went here.
Mod 77 short pencil barrel is the rifle and the man said maybe 16 or 18 inches. He has tried 4064 with a few different bullets in the 150 to 165 grain class. All has been 1.75 to 2.250 in groups at 100 yards and knows that is awful. I told him I would ask because I have a few questions also.
#1 Since this is a compact rifle with a short pipe,, is faster or slower burn rate powder better or worse? I know it depends on the weight and nature of the pill at hand but remember something about burn rate in a short pipe compared to say, 22 or 26 inch pipes. I don't mess with 16" barrels but have a long time ago and cant remember / didn't make notes.
#2 I don't know the twist rate and does it matter for stability for certain weights of bullets,,, in a short barrel? I know the twist rate matters but not sure about the short length.
#3 Seems to me that a 150 to 180 bullet should do fine with BLC-2 , 4064 , Varget , 4895 or 4350. I would add R15 but he don't have any of that and has waited to the last minute to get it right for rifle season. My thoughts was and my words out my mouth,,, Go by a box of 150 or 180 Remmy core's and kill a deer or three. Im not worried about it much but wanted to learn about short pipes and figuring out a good powder choice for them,,,, from people that's been there.
Im sure if it was cleaned spotless and gave to me this weekend, I could get it MOA or maybe less, but im not messing with it. I have fish to catch, leaves to clean and another damn hateful 30-06 to get right from a paying man. Just don't have time for the 308 and not working for free,,, at the last minute.
