Im not one to give secrets away but I know that people around me doesn't get on this site. It took me years to figure out this and had some help from a man that I met on the creek bank a few years back. He always caught more fish than others and BIG ONES, when no one else could. We hit it off right from the bat and he gave me a Mepps to use when I was only catching one fish, every 30 minutes on power bait or such. He was getting 10 to 20 in no time and laughed his butt off / throwing them back in the creek.
I got my limit in maybe 30 minutes using the spinner that he let me borrow and taught me to, NOT TAG OUT SO FAST. I gave the spinner back and he said,,, keep it buddy and never put 6 on the stringer and just keep 5,,,,, SO YOU CAN STILL TRY FOR A BIG ONE. I most have caught an easy 300 trout on that big ass spinner and finally lost it and searched thru hell and high water to find another.
After catching another few hundred, I lost another so started buying the dressed ones and figured out how to make them even better. You can buy the undressed all day long at MEPP"S but most stores doesn't sell them around here.
Take the Mepp's #2 or #3 dressed B2ST G-G and cut the big treble hook off. Put a small split ring on it and a #6 BLACK treble on it or maybe a #4. The split ring gives the hook more action and even if some fish hits at the BLADE and TURNS BACK, you still might hook them in the side of head. Most just knock the hell out of it though.
Even if buying the B2-G ( undressed) you got to take the huge treble off and install a simple split ring and #6 or #4. Don't even try to bend the wire to release the body and hook. You pissing up a rope and just cut the original hook off.
Different places are differ and just saying what I have caught piles of trout on,,, 8 inches to 8 pounds and hope I get a 8.5 to 13 pound one this year. Gold is best here but seen the bronze blade to get them when gold wouldn't. Best to have both on hand.
Im not saying you can just do this and catch trout. I spend many hours on my days off or after work to chase them and put 100% effort in. It took me over 150 cast to piss the last 4lb rainbow off, to hit it and got it in front of 7 people that ive never seen in my life. We all knew it was there because we seen it cruising a few times.
ultra light to #1 in water that is warming up or just getting cool. #2 and #3 in cold water and slow them down if you can. 2 and 3 sinks fast and best in 2 feet or more of water. I love the #2 and #3 in 6 to 14 inches of water also but hard not to get hung. That's why I wanted advise on waders and 3 to 5 bucks a wack sucks on a new spinner.
Any way, here is what I do if not able to buy the correct one and alter it anyway.
If I was a trout, seems like id like the squirrel tail more or the feather sticking out it's butt. Doesn't work that way though.
