I am not sure which is better now, the actual getting your own deer or being with a young one who just got his first deer. Avery and I did our thing this afternoon while his older brother and my son did theirs. I wanted a rifle that i knew wouldn't kick to hard so i went with a 223 with a 60gr bullet. Well the grandson wanted the 264RLB because "its pretty and I make holes in the bulls eyes with it". Well about 5:45 a pair of doe walked out about 180yds down the orchard and he got all hyped up. I talked to him about just going slow and not forgetting all he has learned. The biggest stayed in the tree row and she just was not a good target. The littler one stepped out and was walking toward us when he got set. At about 60 yds she stopped and looked dead at us, I knew we had been made and at the same time he pulled the trigger. She ran about 15yds still coming at us and fell over. I snatched him up and hugged his little butt and we did the high 5 and all the other things that seem out of place but he had his deer.
I ask where was he aiming and he looked at me with a manly tone and said well her head of course. He must have just missed her head, the bullet entered between her neck and shoulder area, no exit. I was for sure we had a gut shot doe. we walked over and then it hit him. All the hunters will get my next words. He just looked at her and said "you know she sure is pretty for a deer, to bad this wasn't her day". Then he broke into the little snot I know, had to poke his finger in the bullet hole and then give a big hoop and holler. About then the other two came running up to see what all the fuss was about. while we were standing there admiring her another doe walked out about 150yds down the way. I ask Ty if he wanted to give her a go. He just shook his head no and said today is her day and we started to drag this one in. We got stopped by tater and he told he will do this. So we head back and he gets the side x side and the garden trailer and off he goes not as fast as I was expecting but he heads back. She is not a big doe but I know he cant do it alone so I tell Ty to see if he asks for help don't just jump in and make him wet.
They are gone long enough i expect them to come back with cuts and bruises from a slight altercation, they are brothers you know. Not even close, they get back with tater in front and Ty bringing up the rear. I had so ask how it went. Well tater just said he had to have Ty help to get the trailer down.... so i looked at Ty, Avery unhooked the trailer propped in on the tailgate of the SxS and rolled her on it as best he could then he was trying to get the trailer down and hooked up but just wasn't big enough. So TY pulled it down and they hooked it up. Danged if they didn't use their heads for something other than punching bags...
I will post Avery's picture of her before dressing, the after dressing photo could be considered inhumane LOL, she was red all over from Him wrestling her innards out, I was allowed to "do her hiney" so nothing got messy.... He did it all with only some coaching from the sidelines, even mom got bit when she butted in. After the shock wore off i was waiting to rescue him from her but she just sat down with me and shrugged. He kept the heart, liver and the kidneys. the pups got the lungs and the rest went to the gully. Ok, he kept the windpipe "because its just to kewl to throw away, can we freeze it for show and tell". She is now hanging in the cooler, her skin is in a bad laying under her until tomorrow when we will wash it and see how bad its damaged and if not to bad he gets his first deer rug.
