I have been teaching an EX coworker to handload. Great guy and believes what books say. He wants his 308 to hit a dot at 25 to 300 yards every time. I can not beat it in his head that this will not happen unless you have a damn good scope and run the dope,,,, PLUS KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH IT.
I proved to him today that a 180 grain TTSX in the 06,,, drops like a rock. Why the 180,, because he wants to shoot the 168 TTSX in his 308. Things should be even from the FPS I seen. My 30-06 is 1.75 high at 100 yards and 4 3/4 low at 220 yards with the same bullet and his 308 is worse. His drops 6.25" at 220 for the accurate load.
We got his 308 sited in perfect with the 168 but he still believes it will be good out to 300,,, holding dead on. I can see chasing deer down in HIS future. I tried my best to work up a chart for him but that's out of his mind and thinks the 308 will kill anything out to 300 or more yards.
IT WILL but cant beat drop in his head and he thinks books and charts on the net is right. I got that rifle to shoot 5/8 inch at 220 yards with the 180 TTSX and that's all I can do for him. The rest is up to him.
This is the 3rd 30-06 and 2nd 308 that I have played with,,, using the 180 TTSX. The charges are the most compressed that ive ever done,,, but works great. That darn TTSX is long and the charges, fill the case to bottom or up in the mouth in both. 4895 for the 308 and 4350 in the other mans 06.
Not sure if its just the 180 Barnes or what. Ive tried many powders in all but them TTSX bullets,, seem to be very easy,,,, to make fly good. The 140 .284 is another that will fly and seems like they have a mission, built in.
Berger for over bore, hot rounds in long throat mags and ACCUBONDS. BARNES TTSX for many cart's and cost to much to try all.
