We took the 17HMRs out to play this morning and I think I have a new cartridge for mine. I have been shooting the CCI 17HMR TNT in it for a while and it does well with it. I am low on them so we tried the Hornady with 17gr Vmax. Same old with it does ok but the CCI does better. Well I could only find Winchester Varmint HV with the 17gr Vmax when I went looking, so I basically bought all they had in stock. It turns out to be one of my better moments, the rifle loves them.
We were shooting at 150yds and using three different rifles just to make sure everything was even steven....
First off I should say my rifle of choice at the moment is the Marlin 917V. It out shoots the CZ with abandon or lust however you look at it. The CZ will shoot an 3/4in average @ 150yds every time out, but the Marlin will actually clover leaf them more often than not (ok if I do my part). Had the two newbs and the tater with me and they are lets just say newbs and leave it there. I am ashamed of my so called kin for the lack of any training they have with any firearm. Enough of that talk, they are getting better and just to stir things up I am selling them both a good shooting 22LR to take home, let dad deal with me and their granny, she is not happy about anything there either.
Anyway the kids got first whack with them and I made it more fun this time out, I hot glued eggs on golf tees and we shot at them. I did them like dad did me and at first they just looked at me and I am pretty sure I looked like they did first time dad pulled It on me. 5 shots for a quarter or a nickle a shot, the catch is after the first 5 you only buy back the ones you missed. Or simply if you hit all 5 times you get 5 more free. And just like dad did me I told them we had some beer so after shooting as long as we were serious. Both got serious really quick and did pretty good with the 22s that will be theirs. at 50yds they didn’t miss a one. Ok the rifles have cheap Tasco World Class 1.5 - 4.5 x 32 scopes on them but they work fine on 22s and I am not going to far in the hole when I sell them. anyway back to the 17s I let them start at 50yds, then jumped to 100, then jumped to the standard 150yds and listened to them whine. At least until the little dude popped an egg one his second shot with my rifle. All three rifles are set up differently but all will shoot great. The CZ has a leupold 3x9x40 on it and the Marlins have Bushnell CF 500 scopes on them. Mine is the old style 917 with some work done to it. The second Marlin is a XT-17V out of the box. After we got to the 100yds I dropped the buy back deal. Anyway they did well for newbs, averaging 3 shots to an egg. I didn’t shoot at the eggs left that to them. I poked holes checking out the new ammo. The win stuff out shot the CCI and the Hornady by leaps and bounds. I actually got more than one bug hole out of it. After about 50 shots they all were getting dirty and the accuracy was going away but I am happy with the new Win stuff, only managed to snag 500 rounds but I will go back and look for more. We then got out the one handgun we took and played with it a bit then I got out the 26RLB – I’ll put that in its own posting.
And after shooting I did give them all the rootBEER they could drink. The tater is at school and the newbs and I just cleaned the guns and I ask them about buying the 22s. It's a done deal regardless of what mom thinks. Even granny was on board with the idea.
