A while back we had some dozer work done on our forty in the Ozarks. The resulting disturbance gave us some new ground to plant for food plots. We have had a lot of rain, but I think that is a good thing!
We planted the new plots a couple weeks ago.. Most of our plots are perennial with clover, chicory or a mix of both... These pics are of one plot we just planted... We seeded it with wheat, soybeans and sunflowers, I disked them in with my tractor and then seeded chicory and clover directly over the soil without covering those seeds.... I took these pics yesterday, and from what I can tell everything I planted is coming up. The wheat, sunflowers and soybeans will serve as a nursecrop to protect the clover and chicory..
I will spot spray the tree sprouts that come up during the summer with roundup...the wheat that the deer don't eat will die out in the heat.. In late August, I will mow it all and the chicory and clover should be well established and ready to grow for the rest of the fall and most of the winter.. The deer are already eating the sunflowers and soybeans...and probably the wheat too...but I am not sure about the wheat..
We will probably add some pelletized lime and some fertilizer in the fall after we mow.... I think we hit it just right! We already had a plot established adjacent to this area, so now it is a BIG food plot..
This is the other plot we planted..there had been a dozer pile that partially burned, the dozer moved it to the side so that it can be reburned, and in the process made the whole food plot tractor accessible...and it is planted too...wheat, soybeans, and orchard grass.....
Now it is green and growing too....
Its 200yds from our porch to the back end of this food plot....handy place to sit with the rifle out the window and a cup of coffee on a rainy day during deer season!
