While I was in Montana, my daughter made it clear to me that she intended to kill a deer for the freezer...She planned to do this even though she had no idea of where to hunt...and she has no hunting partner... I made a trip over to her place at Stevensville...and we spent one afternoon and one morning looking at public hunting land.. We found 2 large public hunting areas less that 6 miles from her house...nearly 15000 acres between the two areas...open to the public for deer and elk hunting... Before I left to go back to the east side of the mountains...we took her rifle up on to the Forest Service land and took a few shots to make sure that it was still zeroed.....
She put two shots just above the bullseye at a bit over 100yds and we decided that was good enough. I left her, hoping that I could be able to get back over to spend a few days deer hunting with her...it didn't turn out that way...
After watching a video on youtube about how to gut a deer...she decided to go it alone. She spent one afternoon sitting in a likely spot...only to spook a deer as she headed to her vehicle after hunting, the next morning she was in her self-found spot before daylite waiting....at 7:20 a buck appeared...at nearly 200yds.... She was sitting on the ground and told me that she had shot using her knee as a rest...she hit the deer thru the shoulder and out the front of the chest..he went a little ways but not far... The little 7x57 I built for her did its job....along with the 140gr SST hornady....and this is what she ended up with!!
The pictures don't do it justice, the deer was well over 200lbs live weight...it was a big deer...the spread on the antlers is a bit over 18 inches...and it is perfectly even. A fine trophy for sure!
The deer was about 3/4 of a mile from her vehicle..and she planned to haul it out on a wheel barrow....as there was a locked road...but as she was getting the wheel barrow out of her SUV a couple of guys came by and offered to help her get the deer out...they were quite surprised to see the size of the buck ....anyway they were good enough to help her get it out, and she gave them a front quarter for their effort....and that surprised the 2 fellas as well! They were nice enough to take this picture for her too!!
I did make it back over to her place to give her a meat cutting lesson and help her get that deer in the freezer... She ended up cutting it up mostly by herself with me just coaching...next year I expect there well be more fresh venison in her freezer!! Years ago I spent time with her to get her first buck, there was a time that I thought she would never hunt again. I guess I was wrong!
