Squirrel season

LOL, I have a 20 ga die set for my Ponsness-Warren 800C, you can make a lot of reloads fast. Shot? I probably have 1,000# here, from #10's to #2's (I think). Picklehead only saw a small portion of what I have for shotgun reloading. LOL

The things are a nuisance down here. But then we have a pecan orchard so it makes us fair game I suppose. In a given season we take around 100 a year, more some less others.. This year with all the rain and growth I see it as a bumper year for the tasty little devils. We have some cottontails and a place for swamp rabbits near here but not on the place. But we (I) am more protective of the bunnies due to rabbit fever. Never had it but I have known a few who caught if from rabbits out west and it scares me. Its been so wet we havent been spraying for ticks and chigger either so they are a problem.. As a family we know about Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and that is worse in my eyes than CV 19 but thats my opinion. 

So far the fleas arent bad but we havent kept any squirrels yet either.... At least the dogs and houses are flea free.. 

The boys have been ready for a month already, we had a couple raiding the bird feeders - no they didnt make it home with dessert.. Wife keeps the bird feeder up and I am free of that one. She has already tried to drown a barn cat with the garden hose for hunting under her feeders -- needless to say that cat wont come inside the yard fence now. I have even seem her with the pellet rifle taking on unwanted critters near her bird houses. I told her the cat was just following her lead - she shoots a bad bird and usually lets the cats have it - well to me that is like welfare - make them hunt outside the yard for them by tossing them over the fence. But what do I know I am just an antisocial type anyway.... 

Squirrel season starts August 15 here. Since I do most of my hunting in Mississippi, I keep forgetting I have a lifetime Georgia hunting license. I need to check out some squirrel spots in Hannahatchee wildlife refuge.

Ditto here on the season start date and I believe it goes thru January.

I found 8 sets at both stores, it took both stores to get the ones that will fit. I got them cheap in my eyes but they not really... The guy at Atwoods told me the one they had just werent selling and the manager said to sell them rather than start shipping them to other stores in hopes of selling them there. The ones TS had may have been ok but they seemed awfully thin to me in the smaller sizes so we passed on those.. I think they were more of a snow gaiter but the package did say for snakes too... 

Wife told me now that I have spent the money we may never see another snake this year LOL.. If that what it takes sign me up for next year too. its a very small price to pay.. 

I miss squirrel hunting. I use to love hunting them with a 22 when I was living in various states while in the service. The grays are really good eating, especially on biscuits or rice.
We currently only have the little red ones here, although the grays are starting to show up down the road about 10 miles where one o our daughters lives.
If they ever got up here in any numbers before I am to old to crawl out the door, I may just go nuts and buy one of the new CZ rifles.
Guess I'll have to be happy with their big rodent uncle the beaver. A friend just brought over a big package of frozen sausage made from beaver.

There are black gray squirrels and black fox squirrels -  I don't think there is a separate species of black squirrels in the US.    You are probably seeing black gray squirrels.   In the Mississippi Delta where I do most of my hunting, we have the black fox squirrels which are a melanistic phase of the regular fox squirrels which have mixed litters.   They are more elusive and love hanging out in the shadows high in the tall oaks where they are all but invisible.
