My finding with the 6.8SPC brass from Starline. 11-04-19
6 cases so this test may be skewed some but so far I like what I see.
Weighed all 6 cases:
1. 118.04gr
2. 119.01 gr
3. 118.00gr
4. 117.90gr
5. 118.05gr
6. 118.06gr
So I necked them down with the 6.5mm neck sizing die and checked the fit in the chamber, nice and snug - about what the loaded carts do.. So then it was check the neck thickness to see if they would need to be turned.. Necks were about the same as the fireformed one I was using as a base line. So I seated a bullet and tried it for fit.. Still a snug fit - not tight but snug. Whipped out the whack a mole and pulled the bullet... then grabbed a loaded 264 cart and did the same... not a good test but the grip seemed about the same. I tried to keep the height and power the same on both just for my peace of mind. And all with no neck turning – a win for me.
Loaded all 6 with my standard charge for the 130gr seconds bullet for fireforming.. Did that out the back shop door and went about as normal as it could get.. Of course I had company after the second shot LOL.. That led to “hey can we shoot some too”? So I told them to fetch their rifles and a few shells... my mistake you have to give a boy a hard number.. One had 6 and the other had a double fist full... Ok they were just hornet carts but.... I set the number at 6 because that’s all the first one had.. Then we screwed up a little.. Out came the blue balls of disaster.. At least it was getting dark and maybe it will dry before anything finds the blue grass LOL.. Not sure who is the weak one - the ones who know we will get in trouble or the one who went with the idea.. I mean I had 6 rounds too.. But at 25yds we all missed the 1st one – forgot the scopes are set for 100yds and didn’t allow for that. But we did make a nice mess with the ones we hit.. And we didn’t clean up anything, will wait a few days LOL
Back to the Starline brass for the 264RLB.. It is small primer and for me worked great but if you have a tight necked chamber I see turning.. My plan now it to pick one case and reload and shoot it until it fails to see how many times I can get out of one under full power. Right now the SSI case is way out front in that test.. I have 1 that has over 15 firings on it and so far its still doing fine. Been annealed twice – I want a real test to see how long they last under real conditions not to see how much abuse I can dish out to one.
Update: the Starline case now has 2 firings with hunting loads and the second firing didn’t even get the tiny soot ring at the lips of the neck like the first time.
