W ell as the original question was about the .300 WSM or .300 Win. Mag. using 180 or 200 gr. bullets what I can add may be useful or not. Your choice. Guess this was close to 9 or 10 years ago when I drew an elk tag for Area 1 here in Arizona. This is an area where after the first shot it heard, the elk do one of two things. They either head for the White Mountain Apache reservation or hang out in the extremely large open areas called parks. The park I was close to is about a mile and a half wide and over 10 miles long.
Prior to the hunt starting about three months doing load work up and serious shooting position practice twice a week and as the hunt got closer 3 times a week when I could get away. Practice was offhand to 100 yards and sitting and kneeling out to 500 meters. I used the club's silhouette range for the longer range practice.
Opening day found me at the edge of a large park and sure as God made little green apples. a full herd of bulls, spikes and cows headed for the middle. OH how I wished I had a bull tag. The herd bull was HUGE! Definitely would have scored high in the book. I picked out the last cow in the string of animals took a sitting position and fired one shot. The cow went down kicking a bit the expiring. Shot was lasered at 530 yards. The load? A 200 gr. Speer Hot Core over enough Winchester WMR powder to push that bullet nearly to 2900 FPS.
Conditions were perfect; about 8 in the Morning, absolutely no wind, a solid sitting position and the confidence of all that practice. It all paid off.
Currently I use two loads in the .300 Win. Mag. The 200 gr. Speer Hot Core and the 200 gr. Nosler Partition. Same charge works for both loads So to answer the OP and the original question, I use a 200 gr. bullet in my .300 Win. mag. If I was o a elk and Mule Deer combo hunt I would probably use the 200 gr. Speer as it will work on deer without too much mess and is adequate and then some for elk, even way out yonder.
