this wasnt a whirlwind romance, *me* and the JAVA language... i have been wondering about it for years, and have looked into it before? i wasnt getting the idea that java scripting language... and the java program language? have absolutely NOTHING to do with each other.
I mean... i feel so stupid... I have NO IDEA where i ever got THAT idea, you know? LM-F-AO....
so...i finally got interested enough, after a buddy gave me a 1200+ page book thats the "complete UNIX reference", and its really just an introductory on many subjects of unix (covering linux, though, which is what i was interested in, since i am running some linux installs now)
JAVA is supposed to be "platform independent", meaning, in THEORY at least? i can make a JAVA program in WINDOWS XP... then run the application in LINUX and it should work... or vice versa.
=======================================
interesting, i figured... i got a big "developers kit" for JAVA, the windows version.
Good...sweet...christ...
i opened the developers kit?? didnt do anything... i had to download something else to actually "do anything"... (this was "beans" something, lol)
so... i finally open the BEANS thing, that uses the developers kit? i cant get the freaking HELLO WORLD program to compile, much less run.
i went NUTS for hours... THEN i went and copy and pasted example code from internet sites? THAT didnt do anything either.
frustrated... i finally realized i was reading a LINUX book, and it was talking about "typing JAVAC program.java" to COMPILE the thing... then typing "JAVA program" to execute the class (bytecode) file to run it...
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
=============================================
platform independent, huh? i went looking, OLD SCHOOL, from the command promnpt... sure enough, ignoring the big gigantic BEANS environment? I found the actual compiler and program runner... buried in the COMMAND PROMPT... you know, typing at the DOS WINDOW like a dinosaur? LMAO...
once i typed the programs in with freaking NOTEPAD (instead of the gigantic developers crap, lol) and simply compiled directly from the command prompt (old school, lol) then everything started working...
...got the applet viewer showing my buttons i made on the little html form, heh heh heh...
============================================================
now, if i can just fogure out how to start USING the buttons, and execute my code i want when the buttons are pressed, i will be closer to "home free" to start using this crap to make something useful... and in THEORY, whatever i get running in windows with JAVA and an APPLET html as a interface? i SHOULD be able to run over on LINUX, too (its supposed to be a platform independent system)
at least, thats the plot line, anyways...lol
========================================
needless to say? i am highly UNimpressed with the fancy schmancy "integrated design environment" they provided with hundreds of MB's of "crap"... when the only way to get a simple program compiled and an applet running, is to do it all old school typing from DOS, lmao...
