They get pretty testy on the out of season too if you dont have the nuisance permits... We have the permits but I am on the side of most dont kill the momma squirrels.. Dad used to say only kill the nuts that have nuts.... I killed one out of season and he about skinned me - not for killing it but my reply about did me in.. It was a male but my mouth said it was nuts to get in fron toe ma when I am hungry... Dad blew smooth up - he used to say Dont push me I will come undone like a 5¢ cigar in a bucket of water - and he could do that LOL.
As for the city squirrels- they taste nasty to me... I killed many as a kid living in town but always the best ones came from farms outside of town. The ones here are tasty things but they dine on deer corn and pecans for the most part. We have been time when we take 5 or more at a feeder here - get there before sun up and be patient they know when the timers are set LOL.. I think they have tiny paw watches or something. No joke all the critters have a built in clocks. Everything including the cattle start moving toward a feeder just before 7am they all know it will go off at 7:15 LOL... We have pictures of what looks like the squirrels corn convention at the #1 feeder..
In this picture you can see 2 quail and 8 squirrel - 3 are up at the feeder motor robbing the corn..
Those are the reds fox squirrels, there are grayer ones too as well as a single piebald one but it is rare to find even with its big white spots..
