I have a new place to hunt, I don't know much about it as to the distance that the deer will be at with the exception of some google map measuring.
I can set up in a blind and use the .308 Win, .243 or 7mm AM. I have a little over 5 weeks to decide on a bullet for the .308 Win.
Distances will be anywhere from 100 to 600 yds. I figure that if the distance will be 0-200 yds I'd use the .243. 85g Barnes at 3300 fps. If between 200-600 I'd either use the 7mm AM or the .308 Win. For past the 600 yd mark (don't know if the deer will come out that far out), but the opportunity to shoot 1,000 yds or more is possible, depending on where the owner wants me to set up a blind and the deer come out.
I need to drop the deer as soon as possible, I don't want them going across the river (40' wide) and the river is anywhere from 400 yds to 25 yds from the edge of the field. I can go to the other side to recover the deer - it's still the same property, but it will be a PITA to do so.
The .308 is capable of shooting 1/2 moa out to 1K with factory Federal Gold Medal Match 168g SMK's, and the Allen can do better than that if I do my part.
If the wind is blowing, I'd be more comfortable taking a body shot (high shoulder to hit the spine) than a head/neck shot out past 200 yds. If it's calm out a head/neck shot is doable out a ways to make sure they drop, so bullet construction isn't a thought. But, on the body shot it is with the .308. I don't want something to pencil thru at an extended range and keep going, but at closer range I don't want something to act like a varmint bullet.
I was thinking of some of the following bullets:
Hornady 168g A-Max G1bc .475
165g SST G1bc .447
Nosler Accubond 168g Long Range bullet G1bc .525 Min impact velocity 1300 fps, no max. Regular accubond has a min velocity of 1,800 fps.
Sierra Tipped Game King G1bc .530
The only reason that I'm not looking at the Berger bullets is that this gun is a controlled round feed gun, and the magazine is 2.865" inside. I CANNOT even drop on cartridge on top of the magazine and close the bolt, the cartridges HAVE TO be fed from the magazine (FN SPR with a 26" barrel)
So, with that in mind, what should I be looking at?
I have boat loads of SMK's in 168 and 175 grain, a few boxes of 168g Berger VLD's, and a box of 165g Accubonds (not the long range ones). I just don't know if any of those will work. The accuracy is there with SMK's and the 165g accubond - I've shot all 3 before.
I have
