Three of the drawbacks of AKs have always been:
1. Poor quality, thin barrels.
2. Poor quality ammo.
3. External ballistics.
=============================================
then you can add to that, the whole "asia and european idea of what a 30 caliber is" issue, right?
IE, american 30 caliber always has been .308" and the european/asian 30 caliber varies from 310-312 or more.
i mean, bouncing a .308 down a .312 bore doesnt ADD anything great
i honestly always thought that the way things came out and ended up? the 7.62x39 gets a "bum rap". EVE%RYthing comes together to make a "perfect storm" against a potentially fine cartridge when used for what its made for. the guns, barrels, bore-sizes, ammo, cases... all combine to slander it.
which is IRONIC, given that the 7.62x39 is in the "lineage" of what went into the venerable 6ppc... regarded as a MAINSTAY "must have" 100/200 yard benchrest competition cartridge.
========================================================
i mean, honestly? precious little separates mathematically, a 30-30 from a 7.62x39... but the way it ended up? ONE is a "legendary deer cart" and the other is considered (by many) as a spray and pray toy caliber.
the whole thing reminds me of the reputations of 9mm luger VS 38spl... the 9mm *still* gets gun writer press about its "goes thru a steel helmet" test from 19-yen-day, and the poor 38spl gets the "old mans cartridge" reputation. Put the cases side by side? they are not so different, nor are the speeds achieved with weight of projectiles different.
the "steel helmet" was ONLY with the military 147 grain loading, and who doesnt like 148-158 grain in 38spl. (both are subsonic)
