Hello all,
Probably a fairly simple question I should know by now, but I still don't...
Why will certain weights shoot well, but some don't?...Lets use my 7mm-08 as an example...
Why will it shoot 100 and 120 grain bullets well, but will not shoot 140 and 150, but when you get to 160, it shoots well again?
I understand there is a pretty good gap between 120 and 160, but I just don't get it yet. I didn't limit it to one bullet brand either, I think I tried about every 140 bullet/powder combo out there...I name my loads as following, M708#1, M708#2 ect. M708#1 may be 36gr. of Varget and a 140gr. BT, M708#2 would be 37.0gr. Varget and a 140gr. BT, ect...I think I'm up to M708#78...I've tried a lot, lol.
I know that a certain rate of twist should stabilize a certain weight, but that isn't always true.
My 30-06 is the same, loves every 150gr. bullet, won't shoot anything good again until you get to 180.
Maybe I'm odd(I know), but I try to do a little homework when it comes to rate of twist, I had my heart set on 140's in the 7mm-08, and 165's in the 30-06...They both laughed in my face, lol. What am I missing or not understanding?
A little off topic maybe...
My buddy's 243 will shoot factory remington 100gr. fairly well, we couldn't find a bullet/powder combo that got close. We struck gold at 85gr. using either Varget or H4895. My 30-06 will hold 2" with greenbox 165's, but I can't get close to that hand loading.
Thanks,
