I have been cleaning rifles for weeks and not shooting much because fishing keeps me hopping. I wanted to play today after the fishing sucked and got out the 6.5 mag. Barrel was clean and the first group sucked in my mind and prepped the brass, best that I could. Only used four pieces for my playing / test.
The first 4 shot group with a clean barrel was with H4831 SC. I cleaned the barrel again and used H4831 next. Both jugs of powder was bought the same day when SWH got it in stock about a year ago. Neither was opened until today and held the rifle to the best of my abilities. Even if I pulled off a tad (don't think I did) the groups are way differ, other than the same vertical and horizontal.
All was done the same, best I could and just wanted to share the different between powders that supposed to burnt the same whether long grain, short or super short cut.
Sure the jugs had differ lot numbers and will because one was regular and the other was SC. Ive seen this many times in 7828 and 7828 SSC also and don't get all crazy because one of the two doesn't shoot good. This test was done on the same day, same baro pressure, same everything so that eliminates a lot of variables. Will it do the same next week or month,,, I don't know until I try. I do know that I would take the .258 group over the .786 any day or month.
Will this load do good at 200 or 400,,, don't know that either because bullets do crazy things in flight. Heck, they might go crazy at 175 yards and wake back up at 230. Might just plain out suck for all I know and seen it many times. Ive shot these bullets before and they did very well,, but I used IMR 4350. Got 4350 in H also and might play with it to. That's a differ can of worms all together though. Enough of rambling and here is the results.
