way back when i was reloading and shooting a LOT, as in, every weekend regularly? (my money and schedule used to permit it, *sigh*)
anyways, i got to thinking about trying the BIG BOY in the 30-06... that is to say, the 200-220 RN pills...
i had found going somewhat heavy for caliber was making for repeatable, if not optimum groups... many times, i found an "interesting" load loading regular weight pills light in powder...
seemed logical to get the biggest RN i could stabilize in 30-06...
*shrugs*
the idea was, to get something with a bit of a whallop, from the heavy weight and the energy-shedding of the RN plowing thru... closer shots wouldnt "pass thru doing nothing", and the "rainbow trajectory" didnt bother me as i didnt shoot really long ranges anyways.
idea was to get something "predictable" and "decent" and "easy to load" that would be great for 10 to 100+ yards...
never did get around to playing with the idea though... read some old timers favored that load for black bear at reasonable ranges... what i had READ said it was "easy to load for" and produced really half decent accuracy EASILY with no fussing around the load... shot great across many 30-06 guns... and if you didnt think you were a SNIPER across beans fields two counties away? it was fine...
back then? one guy loading for several hunting buddies, coming up with "one load" FL sized for everyone being happy? was a great idea... the older guys liked heavy pills, and said it worked "great" for anything from deer and under up to black bear.
i though of it as making a 30-06 into a "brush gun on steroids".
