I went ground hog hunting yesterday and missed twice at 263 yards with my 6.5 mag. I tuned that rifle a few years ago for a 85grn hp and R19. It would touch holes at 220 yards if I done my part and was dead on. It was about 45 degree and the air was pretty dry that day when I sited it in. It was 84 degree yesterday with about 65% humidity and the baro was higher than normal. The gun has been sitting idle for 2 years in the cabinet and I shot it one time to blow the dust out the barrel at 50 yards before I left the house. It hit 1.5 high at 50 yards and left to right looked great.
After missing twice,i put up a target at the ground hogs hole(263) and shot it two times. You could cover both shots with a nickel but they was 3 inches to the damn right. The scope isn't loose or bases because when I put a rifle together, its there to stay forever. Red locktite or super glue and crank the screws down more than they need to be. Same with the action screws once I get it right,so that part isn't a problem.
How in the hell did this rifle change POI by setting in the cabinet? This isn't the first time this has happened to me because my 240 done the same a year or so ago. The scope isn't a piece of junk either. Its a 2.5x10 Nikon and have over 12 of them because I just like them and they are good scopes for the money. This one is the higher grade Monarch.
Something else that I done when I sited this gun in was to make sure it shot the same with a 45 degree barrel as it did with a 120 degree barrel and it did.
I can understand up and down POI changing with differ air density, temp, humidity bla bla but not left to right POI. Teach me something please. These 85grn pills has a big HP if that matters any. O yea,the stock is laminate, floated and sealed but not bedded.
