I haven't played with many 30 cal cartridges like this,,, that eats 210 plus grain bullets. Therefore my powder selection is mainly for big over bore magnums and down. I have piles of powder but some just don't seem to be suited for this round. Running very low on H1000, so I got to digging around and found a new jug of Ramshot Magnum in the stash. Don't even know what I got it for and looked it up. Good in the big magnums with heavy bullets. 30 to 338,,, so why not try it.
SOB and this stuff is a double base spherical powder. Finer than frog hair and had enough to fill a 22 rimfire case on the table after loading some rounds. Stuff would bounce and roll right out of the scale pan, when trickling it. I used data for a 210 Berger in the 300 win mag. Loaded one with 79.5 grains and put the 215 Berger, 50 thous off lands. Safe and was 2890 FPS. Loaded 4 more and ended up with a 1.1 inch group at 200 yards. Ok and not bad. Bumped it up to what I thought would max the rifle out on pressure. I was spot on and 82 grains gave a faint shinny case head and no ejector mark.
The rifle will shoot better than good and this would be a great hunting load. Im impressed with the group but the SD and ES just isn't there for long range and I know nothing about this powder. Never have liked ball type powder and don't have a clue if a certain primer is best. I used the 215M to set it off.
We know the rifle will shoot like heck now and I love to test differ powders. 3030 Fps was the HI, 2969 Low, 2999 average, ES 61 and SD 28. That isn't good in my mind and would show up bad at 500 plus yards. I will get it much better in time and only 37 rounds fired. Most so far hasn't even been about accuracy. I wanted to know how much the rifle could stand before pressure set in, starting point for FPS with a certain bullet and just playing. Now I know that the 215 Berger is going to be in the 2940 FPS range with about 75 to 78 grains of suitable powder. The 230 SMK is going to be 2730 to 2790 with about 75 grains. Sure, all powders are going to take more or less and this is just a base line for my head and notes. Doing stuff like this is how I can just rattle off out of my head,, what might work well for certain cartridges and have fun doing it.
I will go nuts if the Ramshot produces very low ES and SD with the 230 SMK. That will tell me something about the bullet and it has only seen H1000 so far.
