Sometimes you know you just have a problem with family members... I have some that can over stay their welcome really fast. This time I may be the one to eat crow... The aunts son and his family came up for mothers day and to swap mudbugs for other meat. I ask if they had brought up any rifles to hunt hogs with. To which I got a couple yes's and a I need to borrow one. Well the boys spent time here last flood they had at their house so they brought something, dad on the other hand either doesn't own anything he considers as hunt worthy or just doesn't own a rifle. I know he owns a few handguns, he was all about needing to build something on an old action he had... I should have seen the light come on but I missed it. So we got to talking about what I saw a good woods rifle for both deer and hogs. I told him any good 30-06 is fine for both and readily available nearly everywhere. Somewhere in the conversation we got into the do I have any I would part with. So I said I had a few we don't shoot enough to keep but I wanted to make sure no one else had a claim in them. This was after the feast while we were setting around drinking coffee and or sodas. I had a nicely stocked 8mm-06 hiding in a safe so I had the son in law fetch and a few rounds for it too. We drove down to the range and I let him shoot it 5 times and he was in love... I have no idea if he got lucky and shot a nice tight group or he can actually shoot. Its one I was gifted from an in-laws death so I had very little attachment to it and he just loved all the nickel plated goodies on it... to me that was the turn off, I do not like shiny hunting tools, be it anything--- I go so far as to use a black sharpie on my arrow tips to kill the little bit of glare they can give off when the sun hits them. So after we got back we got serious about him owning it. I shot him a price - no I didn't give him any family deal, I know the man will jew on a 50 cent lure so.... Anyway he was going on about how much he liked it and he just couldn't turn loose of that kind of money. I was still under $500 for it - K98 action, ? barrel with a Simmons scope and a stock wife's uncle got from ? but it did fit him pretty well. I was about to just have the boy put it back up when he came up with the idea of trading some of it out because I wasn't budging. So as it stands now he has an Enfield action and a 16 gauge Mossberg 500 on the table. He didn't bring either but he had a friend go take pictures and send to him so I had something to go by. The Mossberg is a used shotgun - but the Enfield action did catch my eye, its a P14 (303) action that has been worked on. The ears have been shaved and the son I trust said it was done by a smith for a guy who was going to build something before hid dad got it. I have no idea what I will use it for but it has my attention. Right now I have gave him my trade in value of both and he is off thinking about it (finding is hidden bottle). I have little use for the shotgun, it will be one of two 16ga shotguns here if its a deal. I will wait till everything is done and the hands have been shook then I will give him a few boxes of ammo for it. I will give the boy the reloading page for it. Like I said I trust him, I have seen him reload when he was here and if he hasn't gone to the bad side he is ok. I guess there will be more on this if the trade does happen.
Crud, the kids are wanting to eat supper -- I would have thought they scarfed enough down earlier. All I want is a turkey sandwich and maybe some tater salad -- I may bust with just that. We had 28 people here and we smooth wiped out a 30lb bag of bugs... Thankfully I traded for them. Not even a claw to be had right now. The chickens are all well fed too.... We sent tons of stuff home with those who have left too... Everyone took a pecan pie, the girls made them as take home gifts, we still have plenty for here. Well got to go play the good host again LOL, if they only knew....
